The Xie Family Western-style House is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Lianyungang.

The Xie Family Western-style House

Located in the middle section of Zhongjie Street, Haizhou District, Lianyungang City, it is also known as the Dutch Harbor Construction Office. This private “Western-style house” was built in 1934 by Xie Xiyu, a local gentry figure from Haizhou. The building was designed by the Dutch and constructed by workers from Qingdao. It was built around the same time as the office building and clock tower of Lianyungang Railway Station. In the early days of Lianyungang’s port construction, the harbor construction office of the Dutch contractors was located here. The “Western-style house” faces south and is situated on a north-south axis. It stands 7.5 meters tall, has 14 rooms, and covers a construction area of 256 square meters. On the southern side, there are six halls and three rooms, with carved corridors both in the front and back. The roof features Dutch-style skylights in the center of the front and back slopes. With the entrance hall as the central axis, the east and west sides consist of flush-gable style structures, with rooms symmetrically arranged on the left and right. The north and south gable walls are adorned with Western-style patterns. The interior of the house is equipped with fireplaces and flue facilities. Two osmanthus trees are planted in front of the entrance hall, one called the “Silver Osmanthus” and the other the “Four Seasons Osmanthus.” This building holds certain reference value for the study of Lianyungang’s port development and modern architecture.

It was designated as part of the second batch of municipal-level cultural heritage sites in Lianyungang in 1993.
