The Memorial Temple of Lady Liang Hongyu is located at Beichenfang in the new city district of Huai'an, commemorating the heroine of the Southern Song Dynasty, Lady Liang Hongyu. The original construction date is unknown, and the temple has been through multiple cycles of rise and fall before being rebuilt in 1982. Liang Hongyu was born in Chuzhou (now known as Huai'an) and was the wife of Han Shizhong, a renowned Southern Song general who fought against the Jurchen Jin invaders. She once beat drums to rally troops in the battle against the Jin army at Jinshan in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu — her “drumming to resist the Jin army” has become a timeless tale. In the fourth year of the Jianyan era during the reign of Emperor Gaozong of Song, she and her husband Han Shizhong defended Jingkou and fought a major battle against the Jin forces at Huangtiandang. Lady Liang “personally beat the war drum” to direct the combat, leading to a great victory. In the fifth year of the Shaoxing era, she stationed troops in Chuzhou and dug up cattail roots to supplement military provisions. “For over ten years in Huai, with only thirty thousand soldiers, she deterred the Jin from advancing south.” She was honored as the Lady of Peaceful Nation and the Lady of Yang Nation. Later, she followed Han Shizhong to station his troops in Huai'an, where they built a new city more than one li north of Huai'an’s urban area to resist the Jin invaders. Later generations erected a statue and built a temple in her honor. As she was the seventh daughter in her family, the temple was commonly known as the “Temple of Seventh Grandma.” The restored Memorial Temple of Liang Hongyu consists of three rooms and a courtyard, surrounded by walls on three sides with the main gate on the south. On both sides of the gate stand a stone drum. Inside the hall is a three-foot-six-inch-high altar, on which sits a shrine. Three sides of the shrine are enclosed walls, while the southern side features a roughly six-square-foot glass panel that houses an earthenware statue of Lady Liang Hongyu in full armor and holding a sword. The statue is five feet tall, exuding heroic vigor and majestic dignity. The temple also displays a stone tablet inscribed with an introduction to Lady Liang's life. In 1982, the Huai'an government restored the temple to its original appearance, making the statue of Lady Liang even more lifelike. The Memorial Temple of Liang Hongyu is now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.
