The Fengcheng River Scenic Area is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

The Fengcheng River Scenic Area in Taizhou is a national 4A-level tourist attraction, built around the city’s moat. It covers an area of 256.8 hectares surrounding the encircling river.

The area is primarily divided into three zones: the waterfront leisure and landscape zone, the urban historical and cultural zone, and the ecological landscape sightseeing zone. The ancient moat of Taizhou is 6,650 meters long, and the “green water encircling the city” forms a rare natural ecological landscape in modern urban areas. Taking a boat ride on the river allows visitors to fully appreciate the historical depth of the city, which was established during the Southern Tang Dynasty. From the Wanghai Tower, known as the “Number One Tower in Jianghuai” and originally built in the Song Dynasty, visitors can overlook the unique “Three Theaters of Opera Culture” found nowhere else in China, temple complexes that have produced world-renowned Buddhist monks, and the distinctive salt tax architecture remnants unique to Chinese history. The abundant well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, characterized by the “Taizhou style,” tell the stories of numerous historical figures such as Fan Zhongyan, Wang Anshi, Wen Tianxiang, Yue Fei, Kong Shangren, Liu Jingting, and Lin Zexu.

On the eastern side of the scenic area lies the Old Street of Taizhou, featuring ancient Ming and Qing-style architecture. The classic brick carvings, decorative bricks, breathable flower ridges on residential gateways, plaques, banners, shop signs, and colorful lanterns create a delightful atmosphere. The traditional opera stage in the street and the town’s theater showcase Taizhou’s local intangible cultural heritage. Over a hundred traditional snack shops and family-run restaurants form the premier snack street in central Jiangsu. In addition to enjoying the urban splendor of Fengcheng River, visitors can also savor a wide variety of delicacies from across the country.

Transportation

The starting fare for taxis is 6 yuan for the first 3 kilometers, and 1.4 yuan per kilometer thereafter. Buses operate from 06:00 to 19:00. All buses are unmanned, with a flat fare of 1 yuan.
