The Dacheng Hall of the Confucius Temple

The Dacheng Hall of the Confucius Temple is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The Dacheng Hall of the Baoshan Confucius Temple was first built in the 12th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1747), and has a history of over two hundred years. It is one of the four existing Confucius Temples in Shanghai. In addition to the main structure, the Dacheng Hall, the Baoshan Confucius Temple also includes the Dingdong Gate, the Lingxing Gate, the Temple of Meritorious Officials, the Temple of Virtuous Scholars, the Sacred Star Pavilion, the Hall of Minglun, the Scripture Repository, and the Scholar's Office. The Dacheng Hall is the main hall for worshipping Confucius. Inside the elaborately carved and gold-lacquered shrine stands a statue of Confucius, with the “Twelve Philosophers,” including Yanzi, Zisi, Zengzi, and Mencius, positioned on either side. On August 27 each year, the birthday of Confucius, local officials, gentry, literati, scholars, and students gather here to hold grand commemorative ceremonies.

After more than two hundred years of natural wear and war, structures such as the Dacheng Hall suffered severe damage. Though restored several times, the temple was later heavily bombed by Japanese invaders during the Anti-Japanese War, leaving most of its buildings destroyed — with only the Dacheng Hall surviving. In 1991, the Baoshan government invested in its restoration, preserving the hall’s original architectural style.

The Dacheng Hall of the Confucius Temple is a magnificent and spectacular ancient building.

It was designated as a cultural heritage site of Baoshan District on March 3, 1989.
