Special Report on Heavy Rainfall on Compensatory Workdays During the Weekend: Red Alerts or Higher Issued in Seven Counties/Cities Nationwide

On the 2nd and 3rd, influenced by a stationary front and southwest airflow, scattered showers or thunderstorms are expected across the country, with a probability of heavy rain or even super heavy rain levels. On the 4th and 5th, due to the stationary front, scattered showers or thunderstorms are expected, with a chance of localized heavy or heavy rain. On the 6th, as the front moves away, there will still be brief showers in various areas. Between midnight on June 2 and 18:00, the area with the highest rainfall was Shihchi, which recorded 643 mm, while Kaohsiung and Taoyuan also recorded 469 mm of rainfall.

The New Taipei City Government announced that areas including Shimen, Jinshan, Shihchi, Tamsui, and Wanli are predicted to reach cumulative rainfall levels meeting the criteria for work and school suspensions; therefore, all work and classes are suspended starting June 2 immediately. The Miaoli County Government announced that due to continuous landslides caused by heavy rain, classes and work are suspended in Tai’an Township on June 2; Nantou’s Ren’ai Township also has a work and school suspension on June 2. Numerous disaster reports have emerged from heavily affected areas—Tamsui and Keelung experienced flooding. The Taoyuan City Disaster Response Center was activated at level two at 13:00 on June 2. In Taoyuan, areas including Xinyi District, Pingzhen District, Zhongli District, Dayuan District, Luzhu District, and Guanyin District have reached level one flood alert. Due to serious flooding, Keelung City announced a work and school suspension starting at 15:00 on June 2. In Kaohsiung, Zhuoshan Elementary School, Baoshan Elementary School, and Taoyuan Junior High School in Taoyuan District suspended work and classes on the afternoon of June 2.Try to stay indoors if going out is not necessary.

Several county and city governments and district offices also provide sandbags. Those in need can contact their local government units as soon as possible and pay attention to water supply issues by preparing for water storage.

Due to heavy rain, the underground parking lot at Tamsui MRT Station has suspended services and vehicle access after noon on June 2. Some schools located in mountainous or storm-affected areas have also announced class suspensions. Those planning to go out for classes should first check with their schools to confirm whether they are operating normally to avoid a wasted trip.

Mountainous areas must be on high alert for landslides and flooding due to sudden heavy showers, while southeastern regions need to beware of foehn winds. In response to this round of southwest monsoon and meiyu front, the Central Weather Bureau has issued a special weather warning. Taipei, Taichung, Hualien, Nantou, and Chiayi are under alert for torrential rain, while New Taipei City, Keelung City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County have reached the warning level for extremely heavy rain. Many mountainous schools have also announced class or even work suspensions.
