The Shanghai Songhu Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall is situated in Baoshan District, Shanghai, at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River. It is a specialized memorial hall that comprehensively reflects the history of the two Songhu battles—the "January 28th Incident" and the "August 13th Incident"—as well as the 14-year-long anti-Japanese struggle of the people of Shanghai. It is a Shanghai patriotic education base that integrates social education and leisure tourism. Covering a land area of 6,000 square meters, with a building area of 3,490 square meters, the memorial hall is a garden-style facility that combines architecture with landscaping, integrates tower and museum structures, and features distinctive architectural elements. The memorial hall is tasked with collecting, organizing, and researching historical relics and documents related to Shanghai’s anti-Japanese war efforts, preserving wartime sites, and promoting patriotic spirit.

The main structure of the memorial hall is built using modern materials such as steel and glass to express the traditional beauty of architectural forms. The tower stands 53 meters tall with 12 floors, and its base has three levels designated as exhibition areas. Key exhibits include “The War of Resistance Against Japan and Shanghai,” which introduces the history of the Songhu battles; “Blood Soaked Songhu—Highlights from the Songhu Battle,” which uses multimedia and film techniques to combine scenes with historical artifacts; “Large-Scale Photo Exhibition of Anti-Japanese Armed Struggles in Shanghai’s Suburbs” and “Atrocities Committed by the Japanese Army in Shanghai,” which feature detailed images and artifacts; “The Art of War—Exhibition of Zhang Mingcao’s Wartime Artworks”; and a theater for film screenings. Floors above the fourth level serve as observation decks, offering views of the Yangtze River estuary and a bird’s-eye view of Baoshan City.

The memorial hall is situated within the riverside Lingjiang Park, surrounded by greenery and close to the river. Its integration with the park and harmonious overall environment is a notable feature of both its architecture and management. Highlights include a 30-meter-long stone-carved thematic wall titled “Spirit of Songhu,” a large sculpture depicting “Songhu Civilians and Soldiers Resisting Japanese Invasion,” and a wall displaying the musical score of “March of the Volunteers.” There are also several cultural and historical sites, such as the statue of Chen Huacheng and the memorial stele for “Yao Ziqing’s Sacrifice in the Anti-Japanese War.”
