Shanghai University

Shanghai University is a comprehensive municipal university under the direct administration of Shanghai Municipality and one of China’s national “Project 211” key universities. It is jointly established by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, as well as co-built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government. In October 1922, during the First United Front between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, Shanghai University was founded, with Yu Youren as president and Qu Qiubai as academic dean. Known as the revolutionary institution where “the military had Whampoa and the civilian sphere had Shanghai University,” it was forcibly closed by the Kuomintang authorities in 1927. In 1983, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government re-established Shanghai University on the basis of branches from Fudan University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China Normal University, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering (Light Industry Branch), and Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts (referred to as the former Shanghai University). In May 1994, the new Shanghai University was formed through the merger of Shanghai University of Technology (established in 1960), Shanghai University of Science and Technology (established in 1958), the former Shanghai University (established in 1983), and Shanghai College of Science and Technology (established in 1959). The faculty and students of Shanghai University are committed to inheriting and promoting the glorious traditions of the Shanghai University of the 1920s, striving to make greater contributions to the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The renowned scientist, educator, outstanding social activist, and senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Qian Weichang, served as president of Shanghai University of Technology in 1983, and then as president of Shanghai University from 1994 to 2010. His unique educational philosophy and leadership brought about a new era of intellectual liberation and academic prosperity at the university, advancing the development of all its endeavors. Shanghai University offers a comprehensive range of disciplines covering philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management, and art. It currently has 25 colleges, 1 faculty (in preparation), and 2 university-administered departments; it provides 71 undergraduate programs, 40 first-level master’s degree authorization points, 171 second-level master’s degree authorization points, 13 types of master’s professional degree categories (including 13 engineering fields), 20 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 79 second-level doctoral degree authorization points, 18 independently added second-level doctoral degree authorization points (including 7 interdisciplinary doctorates), and 19 postdoctoral research stations. The university boasts 4 national key disciplines, 11 first-class disciplines of Shanghai Municipality, and 8 disciplines ranked in the top 1% globally in the ESI international subject rankings. It houses 1 State Key Laboratory jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipality, 1 State Key Laboratory Cultivation Base jointly built by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Shanghai Municipality, 1 Key Research Base for Social Sciences in Sports under the General Administration of Sport of China, 2 Key Laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, 1 International Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 3 National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers, 4 National Engineering Practice Education Centers, and 4 Featured Major Construction Projects of the Ministry of Education; 2 projects under Shanghai’s “085 Project” for higher education connotation development, 2 Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Centers, 8 Shanghai Key Laboratories, 2 Shanghai Engineering Technology Research Centers, 2 Shanghai Professional Technical Service Platforms, 1 Shanghai Municipal Government Decision-Making Consultation Research Base, 3 Shanghai Social Science Innovation Research Bases, 2 E-Institutes of Shanghai Higher Education Institutions, 1 Shanghai Higher Education Think Tank Construction Project, 1 Shanghai Humanities and Arts Innovation Studio, 2 Shanghai Humanities and Social Science Research Bases, 3 Shanghai Key Laboratories of Higher Education Institutions, and 1 Shanghai Engineering Research Center of Higher Education Institutions.
