The Shanghai Ceramics Science & Art Museum is a science education base.

Situated in the Shanghai International Industrial Design Park, the Shanghai Ceramics Science & Art Museum was jointly constructed by the Shanghai Tao Institute Art Investment Management Co., Ltd., Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute, the National Engineering Research Center for Architectural and Sanitary Ceramics, and other universities and research institutions. With a total area of 1,500 square meters, the museum is divided into eight themed exhibition areas, including masterpieces by renowned artists, ceramic art innovation, ceramic glazes, molds, tools, etc. It houses a large collection of precious photographs, artifacts, models, and interactive demonstrations.

Stepping into the Shanghai Ceramics Science & Art Museum, you are greeted by an atmosphere steeped in traditional culture. The quiet yet elegant presence of vases and plates seems almost alive, imbued with the artistic soul of their makers. Porcelain is a miraculous product of life, born from the firing of earth on the land of China. Its emergence, development, and flourishing represent one of the most enduring and brilliant chapters in Chinese history. Ancient people shaped clay into vessels, evolving from the pottery civilization to the celadon era—splendid in the Tang Dynasty, serene in the Song, and eventually reaching a pinnacle of ceramic culture where blue-and-white, famille rose, and various glazed wares were dazzlingly displayed. Contemporary ceramic art grows from this profound historical foundation, retaining traditional beauty within a modern context. At the Shanghai Ceramics Science & Art Museum, you’ll find not only masterful creations by renowned artists but also imaginative works by young talents; classic retro pieces coexist with innovative modern elements.

The Shanghai Ceramics Science & Art Museum is located on the 3rd floor of Building 3, No. 3000 Yixian Road, Baoshan District. With the mission of “promoting Chinese art, enhancing international exchange,” and creating and reviving Chinese ceramic brands, the museum was jointly established by the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute—the only ceramic-focused higher education institution in Asia— the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Shanghai Tao Institute Art Investment Management Co., Ltd. It is Shanghai’s first specialized science education venue integrating ceramic art displays, interactive ceramic technology exhibits, and ceramic art creation experiences. The museum serves as a hub that brings together ceramic technology experts and art masters.

Leveraging the advantages of Shanghai as an international metropolis, the museum builds an international exchange platform and window for new ceramic technologies, materials, artistic ceramic creations, and master collections through strategic industry-academia-research collaborations. Through strong partnerships, it drives the incubation and transformation of technological and artistic achievements, enhances the independent innovation capability of China’s ceramic industry, expands the global influence of Chinese ceramics, and re-establishes China’s status as a global leader in ceramics.
