On August 13, 1937, the Japanese army launched an attack on Chinese forces in Zhabei, Shanghai, marking the outbreak of the “August 13th” Battle of Shanghai. The Japanese invasion met with stubborn resistance from Shanghai’s military and civilians. After ten consecutive days of failed offensives, the Japanese changed their direction of attack. In the early hours of August 23, the Japanese assembled a large number of warships and launched a surprise landing from the Yangtze River east of Luojing (at Xiaochuansha). After landing, the Japanese carried out an inhumane and brutal massacre against the unarmed local residents of Luojing. The people of Luojing suffered a catastrophe rarely seen in history. After landing at Xiaochuansha, the Japanese quickly expanded the occupied territory. By the afternoon of August 23, the entire Luojing area had fallen under Japanese control. Soon after, Shanghai fell, and the Japanese continued their westward advance, carrying out the shocking and world-renowned “—”. It can be said that the “—” was a continuation of the Japanese “Luojing Massacre.”

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, to commemorate the suffering of the ancestors and ensure the national humiliation would never be forgotten, in 1973, the Luojing People’s Commune erected a monument inscribed with “Unforgettable Blood-Soaked Hatred” at the southern bank of Xinchuansha River, the very site where the Japanese had landed. In August 1988, the Baoshan County Culture Bureau rebuilt the monument at its original location, inscribing it with “Japanese Landing Site at Xiaochuansha,” designating it as a county-level protected cultural relic. In August 2003, the Shanghai Cultural Relics Management Committee constructed another monument, titled “Eternal Warning Bell, Unforgettable Memory”—Memorial Monument for the Victims of the Luojing Massacre by the Japanese Invading Army, at the Luojing Town Party School on Chendong Road.
