Luodian Red Cross Memorial Monument

The Luodian Red Cross Memorial Monument is a municipal cultural heritage site and a patriotic education base in Shanghai.

On August 23, 1937, Su Keji, Deputy Captain of the First Ambulance Team of the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Red Cross, together with team members Xie Huixian, Liu Zhongwu, and Chen Xiufang, were brutally murdered by Japanese forces while attempting to rescue pilot Yuan Jinhang, who was injured during an air combat with the Japanese. On August 13, 1946, the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Red Cross, the Chinese Medical Association, and other organizations erected a memorial monument at the site where the martyrs sacrificed their lives.

The original monument stands 5.65 meters tall and is situated on a platform covering 229.4 square meters. It is inscribed with “Monument to the Martyrs of the First Ambulance Team of the Chinese Red Cross Headquarters Who Died in the War of Resistance.” The four sides of the monument recount the events surrounding the martyrs’ deaths. The east and west sides feature porcelain portraits of the martyrs. In June 1981, the monument was relocated to Luodian Middle School (now Chen Bochui Middle School). In 1984, a full-scale reconstruction of the original monument was built 15 meters to the west of the original site. The monument offers free admission to student groups and individuals, and also provides free venue and support services for patriotic education activities, coming-of-age ceremonies, and initiation ceremonies for Party or League membership among youth.
