Shanghai University Museum

Shanghai University Museum (Haipai Culture Museum) is located in the eastern part of the Baoshan Campus of Shanghai University. The institution was established in May 18, 2008 to initiate preparations, and the new museum officially opened and completed registration in 2019.

The museum is currently composed of four exhibition halls and one outdoor area, namely the Haipai Culture Museum, the Shanghai Dialect Culture Exhibition & Experience Hall (Exhibition), the Shanghai University History Museum (Exhibition), the Qian Weichang Memorial Hall (Exhibition), and the Suyuan Outdoor Exhibition Area showcasing the history of Shanghai University (1922–1927). It has a total floor space of 8,000 square meters, including 5,500 square meters of exhibition space (of which 1,800 square meters are outdoors).

The museum is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional culture, Haipai culture, red culture, and Jiangnan culture, and currently houses a collection of over 10,000 items (sets). Since preparation began in 2008, the museum has organized numerous exhibitions and carried out research and educational activities. Renowned scholars Xie Weiyan and Tao Feiya have served as directors successively, with Huang Xuanpei as honorary director. The current director of the museum is Li Mingbin.

Shanghai University Museum is a deputy member unit of the Higher Education Museums Professional Committee of the Chinese Museums Association and has been awarded titles such as Shanghai Patriotic Education Base, Shanghai Social Science Popularization Demonstration Base, and Shanghai High School Students' Social Practice Base.

Shanghai University Museum is currently the only museum in China that specializes in showcasing and researching Haipai culture. It features special exhibitions such as “Boundless Horizons: Contemporary Interpretations of Haipai Art and Literature” and the Shanghai Dialect Culture Exhibition & Experience. It has also published academic works such as Modern Haipai Culture in Shanghai. The University History Museum and Suyuan comprehensively present the development of Shanghai University from 1922 to the present, while the Qian Weichang Memorial Hall showcases the academic achievements and educational philosophy of the eminent scientist, educator, social activist, and former president of Shanghai University, Qian Weichang. Temporary exhibition spaces host various shows on traditional culture and contemporary art. Among them, “Boundless Horizons: Contemporary Interpretations of Haipai Art and Literature” won the 2019 Shanghai Top Ten Museum Exhibition Award.
