The Historical Building Complex of University of Shanghai – Science Hall

Science Hall:

The Science Hall was built in 1918 with funding donated by Mr. and Mrs. Tritt from California, USA, and completed in 1921. The building has four floors above ground and one underground, featuring a steel-concrete structure and an exposed red brick exterior. Its facade is simple, with a square entrance hall at the entry, a pointed arch door, and layered inward-curving pointed arches that resemble those of a church. The Science Hall was equipped with the most comprehensive science laboratory facilities in China at the time. During a major renovation in 1965, the pointed roof was replaced with a flat roof.

The Science Hall was completed in 1921 and was used for laboratories and classrooms for the departments of physics, biology, and chemistry, as well as for scientific lecture halls and exhibition rooms. It has a reinforced concrete structure, stands four stories high, and includes a basement. As one of the most valuable buildings of the University of Shanghai, it ranked among the top in terms of science equipment among Chinese universities at the time. During a major renovation in 1965, the original sloped roof was replaced with a flat roof. It now serves as the building for the College of Science. The original building features exposed red brick walls, white zigzag window trim, and a pointed arch doorway forming the main entrance, reflecting Gothic architectural style.
