Situated at the border between Houli District and Waipu District in Taichung, a hidden gem has recently emerged as a favorite photo spot among netizens. Resembling the moment when the trees part magically just before Totoro’s bus arrives, locals have nicknamed it the “Totoro Tunnel.” Stretching rows of thick woods form a natural wall, ensuring picturesque shots with every click.

The “Totoro Tunnel” is actually a vast grove of soapberry trees planted by Taiwan Sugar. Hidden along an unassuming roadside, the green foliage transforms into golden hues with the changing seasons. The interplay of emerald, gold, and orange leaves creates a painting-like landscape. At the very end of the woods, the path curves into an arc, giving the illusion of leading to an unknown realm — a fairytale scene that actually exists in real life.

The Totoro Path is a small planted area, so it’s not somewhere you’d spend too much time. It’s recommended as a side trip.
