East China Normal University

Founded in October 1951, East China Normal University was established on the former site of Great China University, based on that institution and Guanghua University, while incorporating parts of departments from Fudan University, Tongji University, and others. In 1972, East China Normal University merged with four other institutions including Shanghai Teachers College and was renamed Shanghai Normal University. In 1978, the original institutions were gradually reinstated, and East China Normal University resumed its original name in July 1980.

East China Normal University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and one of the universities prioritized under China's “211 Project.” It has 18 full-time colleges with 36 departments, offering 59 undergraduate majors. Among these, five disciplines—Chinese, History, Mathematics, Geography, and Psychology—are national bases for the training of basic sciences and liberal arts talent and for scientific research. The university houses six national key colleges, six national and ministerial-level key laboratories, two open laboratories under the Ministry of Education, over 40 research institutes, as well as a number of interdisciplinary research, experimental, computing, and testing centers. The university has a Graduate School, with nine first-level doctoral degree programs covering 18 first-level disciplines.
