Zhen Guang Park

Zhen Guang Park is located at the junction of Zhen Guang Road and Tong Chuan Road in Putuo District. Originally a garbage dump site, over ten meters high piles of waste were not only an eyesore but also severely affected the surrounding environment. To improve the amenities of the Zhen Guang Xincun residential community and accelerate the development and construction of the Zhen Guang base, the Shanghai Housing Development Bureau and the Municipal Gardens and Parks Bureau decided to plan and construct a park here. This project was listed as one of the municipal government’s practical projects in 1999.

Under the direct guidance of the Putuo District Construction Committee and the Planning and Construction Division of the Municipal Gardens and Parks Bureau, and with the care and support of relevant functional departments at all levels of government, Zhonghuan Group’s Clas Economic Development Co., Ltd. successfully completed the construction of Zhen Guang Park. It also set two firsts. Zhen Guang Park became the city’s first urban garden transformed from a garbage mountain — an ecological measure that contributes to sustainable urban development and is worthy of reference and further promotion.

Furthermore, Shanghai Clas Economic Development Co., Ltd. boldly innovated by raising construction funds through market-based mechanisms, becoming the city’s first social enterprise to participate in the construction and management of a park. This has paved a viable path for how society can better build and manage public welfare projects.

Zhen Guang Park covers a total land area of 15,236 square meters, with a green space area of 12,000 square meters and garden features, squares, and road areas totaling 2,912 square meters. While meeting the general recreational needs of a park, it takes full advantage of the local terrain to highlight a forested hillside atmosphere. Not only has it created a “green culture,” but it has also become a uniquely distinctive park. The park features undulating terrain, with the highest point having an absolute elevation of 19 meters and a relative elevation of 14 meters. The main entrance square, secondary entrance square, leisure square, Mid-Hill Pavilion, and mountaintop open-air plaza are all connected by winding mountain paths. These attractions complement each other to form an integrated whole. The park’s greenery adopts a naturalistic layout with a rich variety of plants, maintaining an appropriate ratio between deciduous and evergreen trees. This ensures that while the park maintains an evergreen base tone, it also showcases seasonal variations with forests transforming in color across the seasons. After its opening, the scenic and pleasant Zhen Guang Park will become a bright spot in the Zhen Guang area and an ideal destination for nearby residents to relax, enjoy leisure, and cultivate their spirits.
