Former Site of the Fourth Office of the Shanghai General Labour Union

The Former Site of the Fourth Office of the Shanghai General Labour Union is a municipal cultural heritage site and a patriotic education base in Shanghai.

The Huaxi Workers' Club, founded in September 1924, moved from Dechangli on Bīnláng Road (now Anyuan Road) in the concession area to Sandeli in Tanzizhou, Huajie, north of the Suzhou River, in February 1925 to avoid destruction by imperialist forces. The Communist Party used the club to organize and lead the February strikes at Japanese-owned textile mills in western and eastern Shanghai, achieving victory and forcing Japanese capitalists to sign an agreement for the first time, which included clauses such as “no beating of workers, and permission to establish trade unions.” In May of the same year, Gu Zhenghong was shot dead by a Japanese supervisor. The Huaxi Workers' Club organized strikes at the Japanese mills, protesting against the atrocities of the Japanese capitalists, and also sent worker representatives to denounce the Japanese capitalists' exploitation and oppression of Chinese workers. On May 24, Sun Lianghui, director of the Huaxi Workers' Club, presided over a citywide memorial service attended by tens of thousands of people for the martyr Gu Zhenghong. The sacrifice of Gu Zhenghong and the citywide protest became the catalyst for the outbreak of the anti-imperialist May 30th Movement on May 30. The Shanghai General Labour Union renamed the original Huaxi Workers' Club in Tanzizhou as the Fourth Office of the Shanghai General Labour Union, with Liu Hua as director and Tao Jingxuan as deputy director. It led the workers of western Shanghai in participating in the May 30th Movement, and Tanzizhou became a major site for the city’s workers’ anti-imperialist protests.

The site of the Fourth Office of the Shanghai General Labour Union was designated as a municipal revolutionary memorial site in December 1977, and in September 1989, it was listed among the first batch of revolutionary memorial sites in Putuo District.
