Statue in Memory of Xie Jinyuan

The Statue in Memory of Xie Jinyuan serves as a patriotic education base.

In 1937, during the outbreak of the "August 13th" Battle of Shanghai, patriotic general Xie Jinyuan led over 400 soldiers from the First Battalion of the 88th Division to defend the Sihang Warehouse on the north bank of the Suzhou River for four days and nights. They repelled dozens of Japanese attacks, killed more than 200 enemies, and covered the retreat of the main forces. Xie Jinyuan and his troops held their ground in isolation, vowing never to surrender, thus writing one of the most heroic chapters in China’s war of resistance. On April 24, 1941, Xie Jinyuan was assassinated. To commemorate the patriotic general, in 1984, Shanbei Middle School located at 341 Dongxin Road in Shanghai was renamed Jin Yuan Middle School, and a half-length statue of General Xie Jinyuan was erected on campus. On September 1, 1999, the school moved to its new site at 2168 Xincun Road, and Jin Yuan Middle School was restructured into Jin Yuan High School. Mr. Song Huidi, an alumnus of the class of 1939 from Jin Yuan Middle School, donated HK$200,000 to recreate the statue of General Xie Jinyuan at the new location. The statue stands 4.8 meters tall, symbolizing the "Sihang Warehouse" and the "Eight Hundred Heroes." Today, General Xie Jinyuan’s bronze statue stands on campus as a symbol of Jin Yuan High School’s tradition of patriotism. His lofty spirit of patriotism is passed on from generation to generation, inspiring youths time and again.

Xie Jinyuan (1905–1941), courtesy name Zhongmin, was of Han ethnicity from Jiaoling County, Meizhou, Guangdong. He graduated from the fourth phase of the Whampoa Military Academy and successively served as platoon leader, company commander, battalion commander, division staff officer, brigade staff director, deputy regimental commander, and regimental commander. A renowned anti-Japanese hero, he led the "Eight Hundred Heroes" in defending the Sihang Warehouse during the Battle of Shanghai, boosting the public's morale in the war of resistance. He was awarded the highest honor medal of the Nationalist Government for the war of resistance — the Order of the Blue Sky and White Sun (No. 69).
