Liu Hua was an early and renowned workers' leader in Shanghai. He participated in the establishment of the Western Shanghai Workers' Club, serving successively as the club's secretary, head of the publicity department, chairman of the trade union at the Neiwaigang Cotton Mill, director of the Fourth Office of the Shanghai General Labour Union, acting chairman, and vice-chairman of the Shanghai General Labour Union. He was involved in leading the “February Strike” and the “May Thirtieth Movement” of the Western Shanghai workers, and he was an outstanding representative of the Shanghai working class. In December 1925, he was secretly executed by reactionary warlords. Historical records state that after Liu Hua’s death, revolutionary pioneer Deng Zhongxia once said during a meeting of Western Shanghai workers at the Dah Bomingzhong (Big Self-striking Clock) on Laobosha Road (now the intersection of West Changning Road and Changshou Road): “After the victory of the revolution, we must erect a monument here in memory of Liu Hua.” This piece of historical evidence remained hidden for 65 years before being rediscovered. The Putuo District Committee of the Communist Party of China instructed relevant departments to establish a memorial. Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Management Committee, the Statue in Memory of Liu Hua was unveiled in March 1992.

Liu Hua (1899–1925)

Liu Hua, originally named Chirong, also known as Jianhua or Yihua, was from Yibin, Sichuan. In the autumn of the 9th year of the Republic of China (1920), he became an apprentice at the Zhonghua Book Company in Shanghai. In his spare time, he worked as a proofreader for the “Awakening” supplement of the Republican Daily. In the 12th year of the Republic of China, introduced by Shao Lizi, he enrolled in the secondary division of Shanghai University as a part-time worker-student. He often attended lectures in the university division and soon joined the Chinese Socialist Youth League.
