Statue in Memory of Professor Cheng Xiaogang

The statue in memory of Professor Cheng Xiaogang serves as a patriotic education base.

Cheng Xiaogang, courtesy name Quanshi, was a native of Yihuang County, Jiangxi Province. He was a mechanical engineering expert, a technical educationist, and a pioneer in China’s railway locomotive industry and operational management. In 1913, Cheng Xiaogang entered Purdue University in the United States to study mechanical engineering, specializing in locomotives. He graduated in 1917 with both a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master of Engineering degree. After returning to China in 1918, he worked in the railway sector, holding positions such as Locomotive Supervisor, Head of the Locomotive Department, and Chief Engineer on railways including the Chinese Eastern Railway, Tianjin–Pukou Railway, Jiaoji Railway, Beining Railway, and Zhuzhou Railway. After 1947, he engaged in educational work, serving as President of Jiaotong University and Professor at Zhejiang University. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he held positions such as Member of the Technical Science Division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Executive Director of the Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, Head of the Crane Department and Vice President at Shanghai Jiaotong University, and was elected as a deputy to the First, Second, and Third National People’s Congresses. In 1955, he was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He passed away in Shanghai in August 1977.

Cheng Xiaogang (June 1, 1892 – August 1, 1977), a mechanical engineer, was from Yihuang, Jiangxi. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Purdue University in the United States in 1913. He served as Vice President and Professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He had profound expertise in railway engineering, extensive practical experience in the manufacturing, repair, and operation of locomotives and rolling stock, and particularly deep research into locomotive performance and operation. He led experts to inspect Japanese railway factories and related technical departments, and applied what he learned on the Tianjin–Pukou Railway upon returning to China, achieving remarkable results.
