Former Site of Shanghai Brewery Co., Ltd.

The former site of Shanghai Brewery Co., Ltd. is a cultural heritage site protected by Putuo District.

The former site of Shanghai Brewery Co., Ltd. is located at No. 130 Yichang Road. In 1909, a German merchant established the Shunhe Brewery here, which was the earliest beer manufacturer in Shanghai, producing “UB” brand lager. As a result, the factory was commonly referred to by locals as the Shanghai Youpi Brewery. In 1919, due to financial losses, it was acquired by Norwegian merchants and renamed Shanghai Brewery or Scandinavia Brewery. In 1935, it entered into a joint venture with the British Sassoon & Co. and was registered in Hong Kong as the British Shanghai Brewery Co., Ltd. Production ceased in 1949, and in 1957 it was taken over by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and renamed the Local State-Owned Shanghai Brewery. The brewery buildings were designed by the renowned architect Ladislav Hudec. Today, the former site has been transformed into the Suzhou Creek Mengqingyuan Environmental Theme Park. The bottling plant has been converted into the Mengqing Pavilion, which showcases the history of the Suzhou Creek and the achievements of its restoration, while the brewing plant has been turned into a clubhouse.
