Lingnan Park

Lingnan Park is bordered by Fenxi Road to the south, Baode Road to the north, Anye Road to the east, and Lingnan Road to the west, covering an area of approximately 38,300 square meters.

The site was originally farmland, and in 1984, the park was established here as a supporting project for Pengpu New Village (East Block). The construction was master-planned and designed by Zhuang Wei of the Shanghai Landscape Architecture Design Institute, built by the Shanghai Landscape Engineering Company, and officially opened to the public on October 1 of the same year. On March 9 of that year, while participating in a tree-planting event at the construction site, the then Secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee inscribed the park’s name.

The park adopts a naturalistic layout adapted to the local terrain, with slight modifications to enhance undulation. The entire park features lawns as the main element, utilizing existing ponds and water systems to form streams, along which teahouses, winding bridges, and waterside pavilions have been constructed. The water surface is divided by small islands and peninsulas, while the land is segmented and framed by plants and platforms.

The Twin Pavilion Flower Stand is located outside the park’s southwest gate. The flower stand measures 13 meters in length, 12 meters in width, and 1 meter in height, covering an area of 156 square meters. Its retaining wall is made of brick and coated with cement. The stand is planted with five-needle pines, podocarpus, fatsia, Chinese redbud, and palms, with scarlet sage interspersed beneath the bushes for contrast. The southern side features a large expanse of marigolds, edged with dollarweed turf. At the center of the flower stand is a small white structure resembling a pavilion but not quite, entirely constructed from reinforced concrete. The pavilion stands 4.6 meters high without a roof, formed by four pillars supporting three tiers of interlocking square frames at varying heights, resulting in a uniquely shaped design.

The Platform Sculpture is located inside the park’s main gate. The trapezoidal platform is 1 meter high and measures 25 meters in length and 22 meters in width, with steps on all four sides for access. The platform floor is paved with granite, as are its surrounding walls. At the center of the platform is a flower bed measuring 6.2 meters in length, 5.5 meters in width, and 0.10 meters in height, planted with ornamental grasses. Within the flower bed stands a sculpture of the logo of the Architectural Society—a bronze upward-pointing cross, with a 0.38-meter square candleholder at its center and at each of its four tips. The sculpture is 1.4 meters tall, resting on a yellow ceramic tile-faced base that is 0.42 meters high. Seven sets of cement bench-table combinations are placed on the eastern, western, and northern sides of the platform. Flower stands are built around the perimeter of the platform, planted with cypress, phoenix cypress, boxwood balls, boxleaf honeysuckle, camellia, and roses.

The Large Lawn is situated in the southern central part of the park, connected to the platform to the southwest and bordering the Stream of Sprinkles to the north, covering an area of about 6,800 square meters. The lawn slopes naturally from south to north toward the stream and is planted with tiger grass. Six tree stands surround the lawn, featuring evergreen trees such as cedar, dragon juniper, palm, camphor, photinia, osmanthus, bayberry, boxwood balls, and camellia, with scattered Albizia trees along the edges. The southwestern side of the lawn features a cedar tree stand lined with a row of tall, north-south oriented cedars.

The Floral Season Pavilion is located in the western central part of the park, bordered by the stream to the east and connected to the Large Lawn to the south. The pavilion is constructed from reinforced concrete, square-shaped with a flat roof. A protruding drainage gutter is positioned at the center of its eaves. Covering an area of 25 square meters, the pavilion is supported by four trapezoidal stone-clad red slab walls at its corners—each 1.2 meters wide at the bottom and 3.25 meters wide at the top—that flair outward in a V-shape. The interior floor consists of four concentric rings of granite slabs, alternating between smooth-finished and roughly hewn types, with the outer ring clad in white terrazzo embedded with copper strips. Four low white terrazzo seats are arranged in an arc. To the east of the pavilion, near the stream, there is a circular stone table and bench set. The western side of the pavilion is planted with metasequoia, ligustrum, and deutzia, while the southern side features crape myrtle and boxwood balls.

The Moonlight Pavilion is located in the northwest part of the park. The pavilion is white, of mixed construction, with a flat roof and covers an area of 112.8 square meters. To its north is a 1.3-meter-high reinforced concrete wall, and in the middle of the pavilion is a 1.8-meter-high curved wall featuring a circular lattice window. To the east, there is a platform extending over the water, surrounded by metal railings. The platform’s terrazzo floor accommodates three sets of tables and benches. To the west of the pavilion lies a mixed woodland of ligustrum and cedar.

The Park Lake and Fitness Island: The park lake consists of two pools, north and south, connected by a 25-meter-long stream. The southern pool is centrally located, wider in the east and narrower in the west, covering an area of about 5,000 square meters; the northern pool is situated in the northwest part of the park, roughly elliptical in shape, covering about 1,500 square meters. Between the two pools, a peninsula is formed in the western part of the park, planted with metasequoia, Japanese cryptomeria, cherry blossom plum, lilac, deutzia, hibiscus, China rose, and other shrubs. In the northeast of the peninsula, a stone arch bridge crosses the stream to connect with the opposite bank. The Fitness Island is located at the western end of the southern pool, dumbbell-shaped from east to west, and covers an area of about 400 square meters. The island is surrounded by stone embankments and planted with weeping willows, alongside metasequoia, narrow-leaved mahonia, cherry blossom plum, and China rose.

The Winding Bridge is located on the eastern shore of the southern pool. The bridge is right-angled in shape, made of reinforced concrete, 20 meters long and 2 meters wide. It features three diamond-shaped concrete frames, each 4.5 meters high. At the north end of the bridge’s eastern side, there is a roofless pavilion made of concrete, 4 meters high, formed by four pillars and four beams creating a pyramid-shaped open top. The northern end of the bridge connects to a polygonal platform extending into the pool, with metal railings along the edge. On the platform sits a square pavilion with a pointed roof, constructed from reinforced concrete and covering 8 square meters. Between the columns of the pavilion are three concrete benches, with a square stone table in the center. Behind the platform are planted crape myrtle, crabapple, and roses.

The Children’s Playground is located in the southeast part of the park, covering an area of 1,080 square meters. It is equipped with amusement facilities such as electric motorcycles, rocking horses, and mini trains. Additionally, there are 10 pedal cars for use on a roughly 400-meter-long elevated track, and 20 electric toy boats in the pool.

The Teahouse is situated behind the platform on the eastern shore of the southern pool. Its layout resembles two overlapping irregular geometric shapes. It is of mixed construction, cream-yellow in color, and covers an area of 372 square meters. The interior features a glass ceiling, making it spacious and bright. The surrounding outdoor area is planted with cedar, camphor, magnolia, podocarpus, palm, Distylium racemosum, lilac, osmanthus, hypericum, and hydrangea shrubs.
