Shanghai Yanzhong Green Space

The large public green space along Yan'an Middle Road is situated at the junction of Jing'an, Luwan, and Huangpu districts. The Jing'an section of the green space was initiated in February 2000 as part of the planning and construction of the Yan'an Middle Road Large Public Green Space. This project was a significant move by the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government to improve the urban ecological environment, ease the urban heat island effect in central areas, elevate the living standards of citizens, and promote coordinated social, economic, and environmental development. Through an international bidding process, the design was undertaken by Montreal, Canada, while construction was carried out by Shanghai Hongcheng Real Estate Company and Jing'an Greening Development Co., Ltd. The completed Jing'an section of the Yan'an Middle Road large green space stands as a model of harmony between traditional Chinese landscape gardening and historical culture, serving as an open urban garden that integrates sightseeing, leisure, and entertainment.

The layout of the Yan'an Middle Road Large Public Green Space is divided into three sections. The southern part is a space showcasing historical and cultural elements, centered around the site of the Second National Congress of the Communist Party of China and a former civilian girls' school. It is surrounded by formally planted Mexican bald cypress trees, red flowered loropetalum, and holly, creating a solemn and respectful atmosphere. The central area is an urban forest space with undulating terrain, where tall trees dominate the greenery, complemented by various flowering shrubs and evergreen lawns, forming a beautiful landscape with varied heights, densities, and rich layers. Notably, a large banyan tree originally in the green space was buried over two meters deep due to the reshaping of the land. However, through scientific methods such as digging drainage ditches and installing ventilation pipes, the tree has thrived, becoming a remarkable feature within the green space. The northern section is a natural landscape space featuring a 10-meter-high, 150-meter-long large rockery and waterfall built with yellow stones, along with the planting of precious flowers and trees. To the east, a bamboo grove thrives, while the hill is covered with lush pines and cypresses, complemented by the vibrant colors of maples. Below the hill lies a pond full of rustic charm, with a cherry blossom path and a zelkova tree-lined avenue. Together, they create a magnificent and beautiful "urban mountain forest" landscape, offering city dwellers a chance to reconnect with nature.
