Jing'an Park

Jing'an Park is situated at No. 1649 West Nanjing Road, across from the ancient Jing'an Temple, with Middle Yan'an Road to the south and Huashan Road to the west, and has a total area of 33,600 square meters. In the 24th year of the Guangxu reign (1898 AD), the Shanghai Municipal Council of the International Settlement built the Jing'an Temple Road Cemetery here, commonly referred to as the "Foreign Cemetery." In 1953, the municipal government invested 180,000 yuan to transform the cemetery into a park, which opened to the public on October 3, 1955. In 1978, the municipal gardening department invested 220,000 yuan to demolish the southern church and crematorium gate and rebuild them into a teahouse.

In October 1998, the Jing'an District People's Government of Shanghai decided to renovate Jing'an Park in conjunction with the construction of the Line 2 subway and Yan'an Elevated Road, aiming to create a people-oriented, modern garden-style urban garden with historical and cultural significance. This garden would integrate leisure, fitness, entertainment, sightseeing, and tourism. The redesign was handled by a Japanese architectural design firm, with construction undertaken by Shanghai Jing'an District Landscaping Development Co., Ltd. After the renovation was completed on September 25, 1999, the park was opened to the public free of charge. From 2000 to 2001, it received honors such as “Shanghai Excellent Park of Double Excellence,” “Shanghai 'Seven Nos' Civilized Park,” and “Shanghai Civilized Unit.”

The renovated Jing'an Park centers around 32 century-old plane trees along the central boulevard. The main northern entrance opens to a ginkgo plaza, the eastern section features a historical and cultural space that draws inspiration from the ancient “Eight Scenic Spots of Jing'an,” using traditional landscaping techniques to create an impression of depth and scale in a compact area—this area is known as the “Garden of Eight Scenic Spots of Jing'an.” The southeastern part offers undulating large-scale ornamental lawns; the western open area takes advantage of the height difference created by the elevated subway station at Jing'an Temple, using the terrain to build layered hills and water features, including a grand artificial waterfall. The hillside is planted with rare flowers and trees, and observation platforms are set up, offering what is described as a spectacular “urban mountain forest” landscape and creating a space in the modern metropolis where visitors can experience nature. Jing'an Park has vigorously developed plant diversity, with over 300 species of plants. The aquatic plants in the park’s ornamental ponds are particularly attractive to both domestic and international visitors. After more than 40 years of development, Jing'an Park has become a refined, majestic, and uniquely charming urban oasis in the heart of the city.
