Former Residence of Mao Zedong in Shanghai

The former residence of Mao Zedong in Shanghai is a national AA-level tourist attraction, a cultural tourism site, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

The former residence of Mao Zedong in Shanghai is located in Lane 583, Weihai Road (formerly known as Aixiuli, Mu Ming Road in the former International Settlement). It is an old-style Shikumen lane house with a two-story, two-courtyard structure, built of brick and wood, facing south. Room 7 of this building was where Mao Zedong and his wife Yang Kaihui lived from February to the end of 1924. It has now been turned into the Mao Zedong Former Residence Exhibition Hall. On May 5, 1920, Mao Zedong led the "Hunan Drive-Out-Zhang Campaign" to Shanghai and stayed at No. 29, Minhouli, Hating Road (now No. 63, Anyi Road) for over two months. No. 29, Minhouli, was a two-story brick-and-wood house. Mao Zedong and the 15-year-old Zhang Wenliang, who accompanied him to Shanghai, lived in the front downstairs room. It has been open to the public since December 26, 1999.

Basic Information

Mao Zedong visited Shanghai more than 50 times in his lifetime, including 10 times before 1927, leaving behind former residences in many locations across the city. This was the place where he stayed during his ninth visit to Shanghai. It was not only the longest period he spent in the city but also the time when his life had the most family atmosphere. At that time, in addition to serving as the secretary of the Central Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party, Mao was mainly employed as the secretary of the Organization Department and the acting head of the Clerical Section at the Shanghai Executive Department of the Kuomintang, working to consolidate the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the CCP and to advance the national revolution. Yang Kaihui, apart from managing household affairs and helping Mao organize manuscripts, also gave lectures at workers’ night schools and was involved in labor and women’s movements. On the upper floor of the Shikumen building, there is a photo and material exhibition titled "Mao Zedong in Shanghai." Visitors can see the official letter personally signed by Sun Yat-sen nominating Mao Zedong and 16 others as alternate members of the Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang, as well as precious historical materials such as Mao Zedong’s signature in the attendance book during the First Plenary Session of the First National Congress of the Kuomintang.
