The Shanghai Exhibition Center is a professional economic entity approved by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government to engage in conference and exhibition services.

The main building of the Shanghai Exhibition Center was completed in March 1955, making it the earliest convention and exhibition venue built in Shanghai after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. For over fifty years, it has hosted significant political and diplomatic events, received three generations of Party leaders as well as dozens of foreign heads of state and government, and regularly undertakes major municipal political tasks such as the plenary sessions of the Municipal Party Committee, the Municipal People’s Congress, the Municipal CPPCC, the Army Day receptions, National Day receptions, and Spring Festival receptions. It also provides service support for daily important meetings held by the Municipal Party Committee, Municipal Government, Municipal People’s Congress, and Municipal CPPCC. Every year, it also organizes and hosts hundreds of domestic and international exhibitions as well as promotional events for many internationally renowned brands. It has become the city’s primary convention center and a renowned exhibition venue, serving as one of Shanghai’s key hubs for political, economic, technological, cultural activities and international exchanges. It has made significant contributions to Shanghai’s reform, opening-up, and social development. The architecture of the Shanghai Exhibition Center stands out among Shanghai’s buildings. Its Russian-style structure is majestic and elegant, with elaborate decorations. In 1989, it was rated as one of the “Top Ten Buildings in Shanghai from 1949 to 1989,” in 1999 as one of the “Ten Gold-Award Classic Buildings of the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of the PRC in Shanghai,” and in 2005 as one of the fourth batch of Outstanding Historical Buildings in Shanghai, earning its place in the annals of Shanghai’s architectural history. The Shanghai Exhibition Center has been named a Shanghai Civilized Unit six times in a row. Covering an area of 93,000 square meters with a construction area of 80,000 square meters, the Shanghai Exhibition Center is located between the bustling West Nanjing Road and the major traffic artery of Middle Yan’an Road, enjoying highly superior geographical conditions. After multiple expansions and renovations, a comprehensive reinforcement and renovation project in 2001 preserved the original architectural style while enhancing functionality, resulting in a new layout of “exhibitions in the south and conferences in the north.” It now has an exhibition area of 22,000 square meters and over 40 multi-functional meeting rooms and halls that can accommodate anywhere from dozens to over a thousand people. The southern part consists of the Pre-function Hall, Central Hall, East Hall 1, West Hall 1, and West Hall 2 forming the exhibition area, while the northern part consists of the Friendship Hall and East Hall 2 forming the conference area. These two zones are both independent and interconnected, creating a functional layout where exhibitions are in the south and conferences in the north, allowing for flexible separation or integration. The Shanghai Exhibition Center itself does not charge an admission fee. However, some exhibitions may require tickets.
