Introduction

Jing'an Villa is Shanghai's largest modern-style lane residential complex, built in 1932 with investment from developer Zhang Tanru. The site was originally the location of the Chaozhou Guild Hall and included stables used by the British for keeping horses. It was also home to notable figures such as Cai Yuanpei, Kong Xiangxi, and Yu Youren. Apart from one building categorized as a general historical structure, the rest are all well-preserved historic buildings. Jing'an Villa can be seen as a microcosm of Shanghai’s residential architecture and holds certain representational significance.

During the 1930s and 1940s, many prestigious families and social elites resided here. Cai Yuanpei lived at No. 52 Jing'an Villa, where he began his revolutionary work and educational career. Yu Youren resided in the villa while researching works such as “Compilation of Two Humble Wooden Tubes” and “Standard Cursive Script.” In 1942, Kong Xiangxi purchased a large portion of the property in Jing'an Villa, later entrusting its management to the American-operated China Merchants Corporation.

Today, 183 buildings remain in Jing'an Villa. After decades of change, this legendary neighborhood has shed its former glamour. Each ground-floor unit features a small patio of about ten square meters. Looking up, you can still see well-preserved wall reliefs, Western-style balconies, and black cast-iron window frames. The spacious public spaces between the buildings are lush with greenery—creating the perfect setting for cafes, galleries, and more. Coffee, milk tea, and wonton soup offer visitors a taste of old Shanghai charm. As a representative of Shanghai’s modern-style residential lanes, despite the passage of time, Jing'an Villa retains its unique elegance and distinctive flair, attracting numerous film and TV productions—including the movie “Lust, Caution,” which was filmed here.
