Shanghai Theatre Academy

Shanghai Theatre Academy is a specialized art institution primarily dedicated to cultivating theatrical and artistic talent. Since its establishment in 1945, the academy has consistently upheld the philosophy of elite education and developed a distinctive talent cultivation model unique to professional art schools, producing a large number of cultural and artistic professionals for China.

The school’s predecessor was the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School, founded on December 1, 1945, with the support of the renowned educator Gu Yuxiu and established by prominent dramatists Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi, and Huang Zuolin. In October 1949, the Shanghai Municipal Experimental Drama School was renamed the Shanghai Municipal Drama Specialized School. Following the national restructuring of higher education departments in 1952, the Drama Department of Shandong University and the Drama Group of Shanghai Xingzhi Art School were merged into the institution, leading to its official establishment as the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Drama. In 1956, it was officially named Shanghai Theatre Academy, becoming a high-level professional art institution directly under the Ministry of Culture, with Xiong Fuxi serving as its first president. In April 2000, it was transferred to joint administration by the Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Culture. In June 2002, the former Performance Art College of Shanghai Normal University was incorporated, and the Shanghai Opera School and Shanghai Dance School became affiliated institutions.
