No. 221 West Yan'an Road is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit. Historically known as Hong'en Hospital, it was a comprehensive hospital donated to the Shanghai Municipal Council by an anonymous benefactor. Its current location is west of the intersection between Urumqi Road and the West Yan'an Road elevated highway. It was once the renowned Huadong Hospital, which catered to high-ranking officials and intellectuals in Shanghai. Shanghai Excellent Historical Building – Hong'en Hospital

In October 1950, the Shanghai Military Control Commission of the People's Liberation Army took over the hospital and handed it over to the Health Department of the East China Military and Political Committee. In August of the following year, Hong'en Hospital was restructured to establish Huadong Hospital, with 60 beds, tasked with providing medical care for cadres at the department level and above in the East China region and Shanghai, experts and professors at Grade 1 and 2 and above, and foreign guests.

In February 1965, it merged with the adjacent Shanghai Public Medical Treatment Hospital and was renamed Shanghai Public Medical Treatment Hospital. The following March, it was renamed again as Yan'an Hospital.

In December 1967, the south and north buildings of the hospital were separately administered, with the south building reverting to the name Huadong Hospital and the north building retaining the name Yan'an Hospital.

In May 1970, Yan'an Hospital relocated to Kunming, Yunnan, and its premises were transferred to Huadong Hospital, with the north building remaining open to the public.

In 1986, the Shanghai Institute of Geriatric Medicine was established.

By the end of 1990, the hospital had 400 beds and 985 health technical personnel, including 107 with senior technical titles.

In 1987, it became a teaching hospital of Shanghai Medical University.

In 1994, it was rated as a Grade III Class A hospital.

The Hong'en Hospital, built in 1926, has a history of nearly 80 years but remains well preserved. The present-day West Yan'an Road was then called Great Western Road. The architecture of Hong'en Hospital is in the style of European Renaissance, designed by Hungarian architect László Hudec, who later designed the Park Hotel, and constructed by the Pan Rongji Construction Company. It covers an area of 2,300 square meters with a floor space of 10,649 square meters.

To the east of the building is a garden, close to Haig Road, now called Huashan Road. The building has 5 floors, with a partial 6th floor, and is a mixed structure of reinforced concrete and brick-wood. The layout is in the shape of the letter “H,” divided into three parts: the South Building, the North Building, and the Outpatient Building. The South Building is the hospital’s ward block, with each floor covering approximately 1,200 square meters, while the North Building covers about 500 square meters per floor. Between the two is the outpatient building, which is 10.5 meters wide and 18 meters long. The south façade is symmetrical along its east and west wings. The ground floor features arched doorways on the east, west, and central sections, flanked by double columns and with corridors inside. The central section has five arched doorways, with the entrance spanning about 20 meters leading to a central hall that occupies the height of two floors, approximately 8 meters. Floors two to five have open-style balconies.

The east and west sections protrude slightly more than the middle, with triangular arches on the fifth floor, the apex of which reaches 24 meters above the ground. The entire façade presents a dynamic three-part composition. The interior of the building is exquisitely decorated, with the hall floor made of marble. Different materials are used for the floors of various rooms, including cement, mosaic, terrazzo, wooden flooring, and rubber flooring. There is one passenger elevator and one freight elevator.
