Former Residence of Shi Liangcai

The former residence of Shi Liangcai is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai Municipality.

The former residence of Shi Liangcai is part of an elegant garden-style residential complex located at No. 257 Tongren Road. The building has a construction area of 2,494 square meters and a garden area of 2,276 square meters. Its former owner was Shi Liangcai, a leading figure in Shanghai’s journalism scene and general manager of the Shen Bao newspaper. It is now the Office of Foreign Affairs of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. The residence is enclosed by a high perimeter wall, and two scholar trees planted personally by Shi Liangcai still stand in the courtyard. The house has three stories, with sturdy rusticated pilasters on the second floor. The hallway is spacious, featuring side walls with fireplaces. The flooring of the hallway, as well as the stairs and handrails, are all made of beige marble with decorative patterns.

The main building is a light yellow Western-style house with a red-tiled roof and several white chimneys. Its doors and windows are painted in red lacquered wood. The red building is a two-story row house, also light yellow in color, with a red tile roof and red lacquered wood features. Although amenities from its early days such as a small forest and swimming pool no longer exist, the entire structure remains very imposing.

In 2014, it was designated as a municipal-level protected cultural heritage site.
