The former residence of Shi Liangcai on Tongren Road is a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former residence of Shi Liangcai on Tongren Road is located at No. 257 Tongren Road. It was built in 1922 and is categorized as an important modern historical site and representative architecture.

This is a set of elegant garden residences located at No. 257 Tongren Road. The building covers a floor area of 2,494 square meters, with a garden area of 2,276 square meters. Its former owner was Shi Liangcai, a newspaper tycoon from Shanghai and the general manager of Shen Bao. It is now used as offices by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government Foreign Affairs Office. The residence is surrounded by high walls. Two scholar trees in the courtyard were personally planted by Shi Liangcai. The house has three floors; the second floor features sturdy rusticated pilasters, a spacious hallway, wall-mounted fireplaces, and the hallway floor, staircase, and banisters are all made of beige marble with decorative patterns.

The main building is a light yellow Western-style house with a red-tiled roof and several white chimneys. The doors and windows are painted red wood. The smaller two-story red building is also light yellow in color, with a red-tiled roof and red-painted wood. Although amenities such as the small forest and swimming pool from the time of its construction no longer exist, the entire structure still appears very imposing.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government reviewed and announced the former residence of Shi Liangcai on Tongren Road as a Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit (Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).

Shi Liangcai (1880–1934), originally named Shi Jiaxiu, was from Jiangning County. He was a newspaper industry capitalist.

In the 27th year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1901), he was admitted to the Hangzhou Sericulture School. After graduation, he successively taught at Shanghai’s Wang Family Yucai School, the Ordnance School, Wuben Girls’ School, and Nanyang Middle School. In the 30th year of Guangxu, he founded the Shanghai Women’s Sericulture School, which gained attention from Shanghai’s business and academic communities. The following year, he participated in the Scholarly Research Association organized by Shanghai’s academic circles and, along with Huang Yanpei, initiated the establishment of the Jiangsu Educational Affairs Association.
