Former Residence of Rong Zongjing

The former residence of Rong Zongjing is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai.

The former residence of Rong Zongjing is located at No. 186 North Shaanxi Road, Jing'an District, Shanghai, near West Nanjing Road. Designed by Chen Chuanjiang, it features a reinforced concrete structure and was built in 1918. It showcases an eclectic architectural style. The building is rich in form, with a main façade that includes a two-story colonnaded loggia, reflecting characteristics of French classicism. Its floor plan is complex, and the interior features exquisitely decorated floors, woodwork, and stained glass.

The former residence of Rong Zongjing is built with a brick-concrete structure, facing south and featuring a terrace on part of the roof. The floor plan is complex, and the overall façade is divided by horizontal lines. The main southern entrance has nine steps, and the porch is adorned with finely carved pediments. The street-side façade is designed in a zigzag shape, with a curved outward projection at the corner, beneath which is a secondary entrance flanked by Corinthian columns supporting a porch above a small semi-circular balcony. The other side façade features Ionic columns on both the first and second floors, with string courses between the levels and scroll-shaped decorations beneath the windows. The building is large in scale and exudes luxury and elegance.

On April 4, 2014, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government designated and announced the former residence of Rong Zongjing as a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai (Hu Fu Fa [2014] No. 29).
