Former Site of the Chinese Commodities Exhibition Hall of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce

The former site of the Chinese Commodities Exhibition Hall of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce is a cultural heritage site protected by Jing’an District.

The former site of the Chinese Commodities Exhibition Hall of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce is located at No. 470 North Suzhou Road. After its establishment, the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce, in addition to participating in political activities, expressing the views of the business community, and safeguarding the interests of merchants, also promoted commercial development through various initiatives. Starting in 1914, the Chamber set up a Commodities Exhibition Hall, and in 1920, it built the Chinese Commodities Exhibition Hall (North Building). The Exhibition Hall permanently displayed, categorized and organized, products from various domestic manufacturers as well as goods from across the country and around the world. It also featured a National Products Market and hosted temporary exhibitions, all with the aim of promoting, selling, and improving domestic goods. The Chinese Commodities Exhibition Hall was situated in the eastern part of the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce (facing Henan North Road), oriented north-south, and was a three-story reinforced concrete structure covering an area of approximately 520 square meters. After 1946, part of the building was rented out to entities such as the National Daily News and the National Newspaper. In 1974, during the widening of Henan Road, the eastern section of the building was demolished by 3.5 meters, and an additional floor was added on top. In 2006, it was demolished during the reconstruction and expansion of Henan Road Bridge and the construction of Tian Tong Road Station on Line 8 of the Shanghai Metro.
