The Liang Family Residence

The Liang Family Residence is a cultural heritage site protected by Jing’an District.

Located at No. 61, Lane 457, North Shanxi Road. Originally built as a private residence by Qian Tianming, a local gentry and businessman in the late Qing Dynasty, it was purchased from the Qian family by the Liang family around the time of the War of Resistance against Japan. The residence faces south and consists of one row of buildings and one courtyard, in the style of a traditional Jiangnan-style garden home. It mainly includes a main building, a secondary building for workers, and a small garden on the south side, covering a total area of about 340 square meters. The main entrance is on the east side, featuring a traditional Chinese-style gate. Both the inner and outer lintels are adorned with Western-style brick carvings in the shape of shields and Corinthian pilasters as door surrounds. Faint inscriptions on the lintel plaque can still be seen, reading the auspicious phrase “君之安宅” (“Your Peaceful Abode”). The main building faces south and covers an area of approximately 190 square meters, consisting of two floors with a brick-and-wood structure. Its principal façade is divided into three vertical sections: the central ground floor features an open porch with floor-to-ceiling doors fitted with frosted stained glass in various colors, and a mosaic-tiled floor—reportedly imported from Germany. The second floor has an inner corridor balcony with cement balustrades in the shape of vases, and a hexagonal corner tower protruding from the right side. The building has rectangular windows and doors, with red brick lintels, and a clear-water brick exterior wall accented with horizontal red brick bands. The Liang Family Residence largely retains its original appearance and is a relatively typical example of a late Qing Dynasty residence that blends Chinese and Western architectural styles.
