The Zhu Douwen Mansion

is a cultural heritage site under the protection of Jing'an District, located at Lane 759, Kangding Road. Built in 1926, it is an independent garden residence that once served as the mansion of the prominent Zhu Douwen family. Zhu Douwen was the grandson of Zhu Hongdu, who founded China’s first privately-owned modern textile mill. The enterprises he established, including the Yuyuan Cotton Mill and Yutong Flour Mill, had branches across the country. The building features a reinforced concrete structure and is quite large in scale. Its main façade has a symmetrical composition, with large areas of exposed brick on the exterior walls. Stone finishes are used for column capitals, railings, and corners, creating a vibrant color contrast. The central part of the façade includes a two-story giant-column entrance and open porch, with a semicircular balcony on the second floor and a vase-patterned railing open-air balcony on the third floor. The side façade features an exquisitely designed entrance hall with some traditional Chinese decorative elements, and an open-air balcony above the porch. The roof is equipped with four chimney flues for fireplaces, emphasizing the principle of symmetry. The overall architectural style is Classical. In October 2005, it was designated as an Outstanding Historical Building of Shanghai by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government.
