Former Site Memorial of the Central Military Commission of the CPC

The former site of the Central Military Commission of the CPC is located at the intersection of Xinzha Road and Datian Road in Jing'an District. The building was constructed in September 1919 and is a century-old, traditional Shikumen lane residence. Originally part of Jingyuan Lane on Xinzha Road, its current address is No. 12, Lane 613, Xinzha Road, and it is a protected cultural heritage site of Shanghai. Between 1928 and 1929, this site witnessed the arduous struggles of the Central Military Commission of the CPC in Shanghai.

The Central Military Commission of the Communist Party of China (also known as the Military Department) and its affiliated institutions were key bodies leading the Party’s military work. They remained active in Shanghai (with a brief period in Wuhan) under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee. Amid a sharp, complex, and perilous environment, the Central Military Commission undertook strenuous explorations on major issues such as arming workers and peasants, launching uprisings, establishing the people's army, and guiding the construction of the Red Army. The site also witnessed the illustrious deeds of revolutionary stalwarts such as Zhou Enlai, Yang Yin, and Peng Pai. "Through storms in Jingyuan Lane, a monument to military history stands." The early practices and explorations of the CPC in military struggle forged the loyal and courageous character of the people’s army, rooted the red genes of the people's armed forces, accumulated valuable experience for its growth, and laid a solid foundation for Mao Zedong’s theory of encircling the cities from the countryside and seizing power through armed struggle.
