Daqing Da Miao Scenic Area

The Daqing Da Miao Scenic Area is a cultural tourism attraction.

The Da Miao Scenic Area is a provincial-level scenic spot. It features the Yanfu Temple Twin Pagodas and Screen Wall, built in the 23rd year of the Kangxi reign (1684), the over 3,000-year-old Baijinbao Ancient Cultural Site, as well as the Chuhedian Battlefield Site, the Tomb Site of Emperor Daozong, Liao Dynasty imperial palaces, Xinxin Lake, Yulin Park, Sancha River, and more.

Yanfu Temple is located in Da Miao Village, Minyi Township. The temple was built in the 23rd year of the Qing Dynasty’s Kangxi reign (1684) and was the highest-ranking temple of the Rear Horqin Banner. On December 25, 1948, it was destroyed in a great fire, leaving only the Yanfu Temple Twin Pagodas and Screen Wall. About 150 meters in front of the twin pagodas lies a natural sand dune shaped like a giant dragon, adorned with uniquely scattered and gracefully shaped ancient elm trees. Below the dune is a natural lake of the Nanhu Fishery, named Xinxin Lake, covering about 5,000 acres. Together with Yanfu Temple and the elm woods on the dune, it forms a harmonious tableau of human and natural landscapes. Reconstruction of the temple is currently underway, and the main hall is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The Baijinbao Cultural Site is as renowned as the Banshan Cultural Site. According to the first scientific research, it dates back over 3,000 years and is an important part of the culture of the “Heishui ancestors.” It is now a national-level ancient cultural reserve.

Sancha River is located south of Maoxing Town, at the confluence of the Second Songhua River and the Nen River, where the Songhua River begins—hence the name Sancha (Three Forks) River. At the meeting point of the two rivers, a distinct black-and-white waterline forms, hence called the “Three-Colored Water Line.” This phenomenon, unique to our county aside from the Jing and Wei Rivers at the Yellow River, has been celebrated since ancient times with the saying “In the south there are Jing and Wei, in the north there are Li and Hei.” In the 21st year of the Kangxi reign (1682), Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty visited this area and left behind the verse: “From Changbai’s source swift currents flow, where Wu River joins, its power grows.”

Daqing Mountain lies by Maoxing Lake and is the site of the Jin Dynasty’s Jiangzhou City ruins. The world-famous battle where a smaller force triumphed over a larger one—the Chuhedian Campaign—took place here. Records indicate that in late November of the fourth year of the Tianqing reign during the Liao Dynasty, Emperor Taizu of the Jin, Wanyan Aguda, mobilized his troops to attack the Liao. Leading over 3,000 elite soldiers from Ningjiang Prefecture (now Ningjiang District, Songyuan, Jilin), he launched a surprise night raid on Jiangzhou City and decisively defeated 100,000 Liao soldiers. To this day, Daqing Mountain is strewn with bones, traces of smoke remain, and fragments of weapons can be found everywhere. Standing atop Daqing Mountain, you can gaze over a vast expanse of river and sky, shaded greenery, boundless wetlands, and delightful scenery.

Teshi Hai Ancient City Ruins are located in Jianmin Village, Minyi Township. This was the hometown of Xiao Siwen, the Northern Secretariat Chancellor of the Liao Dynasty. Xiao Siwen’s daughter, Xiao Yanyan—known to us from novels as the “Empress Dowager who personally led troops against the Khitan and commanded the armies”—was his child. Xiao Siwen’s granddaughter was also chosen as empress by Emperor Shengzong and bestowed the title Empress Qitian. The origin of the name Teshi Hai vividly records the life, death, glory, shame, blood, and tears of this empress.

The Liao Dynasty Imperial Palace is located in Gucheng Village, Xinzhan Town. Also known as the “Shaoyangchuan Temporary Residence,” it was where emperors of the Liao Dynasty would come every spring for the “Spring Naboo”—a seasonal imperial outing involving fishing, hunting, and receiving northern tribal chieftains for political discussions. This became a fixed tradition by the mid-Liao period. Each “Spring Naboo” included a “First Fish Banquet” and a “First Goose Banquet,” using the first fish caught and the first goose hunted by the emperor.

This scenic area seamlessly blends traditional and modern culture, as well as human and natural landscapes, complementing each other beautifully and fully showcasing the long history and splendid culture of Zhaoyuan.
