East Imperial Garden

The East Imperial Garden, built in 1938, covers an area of over 11,100 square meters and is a Japanese-style garden designed by Japanese landscape architect Kura Sato. The garden features a harmonious blend of motion and stillness, with changing views as you walk through, serving as a leisure and entertainment space for Puyi and his “consorts.” Initially, the garden only had an artificial hill, a swimming pool, and a horse-riding ground. Later, an air-raid shelter was constructed in the East Imperial Garden, and a “Kenchōsha” (State Foundation Shrine), dedicated to Amaterasu, the ancestral deity of the Japanese imperial family, was built on the former horse-riding ground. The artificial hill is located in the southern part of the garden, with its mountain ridges modeled after Changbai Mountain—the ancestral home of the Manchu people—and includes a waterfall reminiscent of that on Changbai Mountain.
