Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Tonghua County

The Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Tonghua County is located on the slopes of Damashan Mountain in Kuaimaomu Town, the county seat of Tonghua County, behind the office compound of the county Party committee and government. It covers an area of 1,200 square meters, with a protected area of the same size. Established and put into use in July 1989, the monument stands 12.6 meters tall with a base of 16 square meters. It is a county-level cultural relics protection unit and also a patriotic education base.

Tonghua County has a glorious revolutionary history. Historical records document 372 named martyrs and 149 unnamed martyrs who sacrificed their precious lives for the new China during the War of Resistance against Japan, the Liberation War, and the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea. The inscription reads: Tonghua County was a guerrilla zone for the anti-Japanese armed forces in Northeast China and the battleground of the “Four Defenses of Linjiang.” During the wars against aggression and for liberation, countless revolutionary martyrs fought bravely and indomitably, shedding blood and laying down their lives for national independence, liberation of the people, and freedom of the nation. They engaged in arduous struggles against invaders and reactionary forces, composing heroic and moving chapters with their blood and lives. Their glorious deeds shine as brightly as the sun and moon, and endure as long as heaven and earth. Their legacy will be immortalized in history and forever celebrated. To commemorate the martyrs, express our grief, inspire future generations, this monument is hereby erected.

To honor the great achievements of the martyrs and carry forward the fine traditions of the revolution, in 1988, the county Party committee and government listed the construction of the Revolutionary Martyrs Monument as one of the ten major tasks to be accomplished that year, assigning the county’s Urban Construction Bureau and Civil Affairs Bureau to oversee the project. On July 13, construction of the monument commenced. The design institute of the Urban Construction Bureau referenced the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Tiananmen Square to determine the style of the main structure. Materials for the body, base, and reliefs were selected from granite quarried in Jiaohe, Jilin, and white marble from Qufu, Henan. On July 31, 1989, the monument was completed, and its unveiling ceremony was attended by 35,000 people, including leaders of the county-level cultural relics protection unit and officials and masses from all walks of life. The establishment of the Monument to Revolutionary Martyrs of Tonghua County was a major event in the political life of the county’s people. Kuaimaomu Town: Located in the central part of Tonghua County, Kuaimaomu Town is the seat of the county government.
