Former Site of the Tonghua Branch Committee of the Liaodong Special Branch of the Communist Party of China

The former site of the Tonghua Branch Committee of the Liaodong Special Branch of the Communist Party of China is a classic red tourism attraction.

The former site of the Tonghua Branch Committee of the Liaodong Special Branch of the Communist Party of China is located within the Qidao Gou Iron Mine in Guosong Town, Tonghua County (in Qidao Gou Village), 9 kilometers from Liudao Gou Village, where the town government is situated.

Following the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China’s directive to “rapidly strengthen work in the Northeast,” the Urban Work Department of the Jiaodong District Committee of the CPC (internally referred to as —— Department) dispatched Communist Party member Luo Heng (original name Zhang Zhiqing) to the Qidao Gou Iron Mine in Tonghua County in August 1944 to carry out underground party work. In early October of the same year, Yao Liming, Li Jianyun, and others met with Luo Heng at the iron mine. Representing the Party organization, Luo Heng admitted Yao Liming, Li Jianyun, Li Pengfei, and Liu Renhong as Party members. A secret meeting was held in a workers' shack, officially establishing the "Liaodong Anti-Japanese Alliance General Association" (abbreviated as "Liao Meng"), followed by the establishment of the Tonghua, Ji’an (now Ji’an City), and Qidao Gou branches of "Liao Meng." In February 1945, Liu Zhixiang (also known as Liu Zixiang or Fang Zhizhou), acting on orders from the Jiaodong District Committee of the CPC, came to the Qidao Gou Iron Mine in Tonghua County from Andong (now Dandong City). After hearing Luo Heng’s report on the establishment of the Party organization, the formation of the "Liao Meng" general association, the cadre situation, and future action plans, he formally approved the Party members developed by Luo Heng. A Party member conference was then held in a shack at the timber mill of the iron mine, where instructions from the higher Party committee were conveyed, and the international and domestic struggle situations were explained, greatly inspiring those present. Liu Zhixiang announced the decision of the higher Party committee to establish the Liaodong Special Branch Committee of the Communist Party of China (abbreviated as the Liaodong Special Branch), with Liu Zhixiang as secretary, Luo Heng as organizational commissioner, and Li Rong as publicity commissioner. At the same time, the Tonghua Branch Committee of the Liaodong Special Branch Committee of the Communist Party of China (abbreviated as the Tonghua Branch of the Liaodong Special Branch) was established, with five Party groups under it: Tonghua, Ji’an, Qidao Gou, Dalian, and Shenyang. Luo Heng served as the branch secretary, Li Jianyun as the publicity commissioner, and Li Jianyun also doubled as the head of the Tonghua Party group, while Yang Deguang was the head of the Qidao Gou Party group. After the “August 15” liberation, the 16th Sub-region of the Jireliao Military Region, led by Liu Xiyuan (also known as Liu Dongyuan) and Jiang Yaqian, entered Tonghua on September 20 and, with the cooperation of the Tonghua Branch of the Liaodong Special Branch, took over the puppet regime.

The establishment of the Tonghua Branch provided a strong leadership core for the anti-Japanese struggle in Tonghua. Party members, members of the Anti-Japanese Alliance, and miners with deep grievances united closely around the local Party organization to carry out various forms of anti-Japanese resistance. On August 22, 1945, the Tonghua Branch successfully organized an armed uprising of the mine workers in Tonghua, seizing a strategic opportunity for the main forces of the Communist Party to smoothly take over Tonghua.

Formed in February 1945 and utilized in May 1983. The site, the Qidao Gou Iron Mine, is now nearly closed and has not received funding for development and construction for many years. (Provided by the Party School of the Tonghua County Committee of the CPC)
