Memorial Monument to General Du Guanghua's Martyrdom

The Memorial Monument to General Du Guanghua's Martyrdom is a classic red tourism attraction and a patriotic education base.

The site where General Du Guanghua sacrificed his life is located on the hillside behind Changqing Village in the southern part of Guanghua Town, Tonghua County, about 1 li from the village center and 6 kilometers from Guanghua Village, where the town government is located. Covering an area of 5,000 square meters with a protected zone of the same size, the site has a high level of preservation and development. With a total investment of over 600,000 yuan raised over time, two rounds of renovation were carried out in 2004 and 2007. In June 2007, the Guanghua Town Government of Tonghua County erected a monument at the site where General Du Guanghua, commander of the 10th Regiment of the 4th Column of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army, sacrificed his life, as a permanent memorial.

Du Guanghua, male, originally named Du Yunsheng, also known as Du Yonghai, was born in 1915 into a poor family in Langzhong County, Sichuan Province. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1932, enrolled in the Red Army guerrilla forces in 1933, and participated in the Long March. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan in 1937, he fought in the Battle of Pingxingguan as part of the 686th Regiment of the 115th Division of the Eighth Route Army, and was awarded the title of Model Company Commander for his role in the annihilation battle against the Japanese in Liangshan, Shandong the following year. After 1939, he repeatedly achieved meritorious service, and was promoted to regimental commander of the 14th Regiment of the Jiaodong Military District in 1944. In September 1945, the 5th and 6th Divisions under the Jiaodong Military District crossed the Bohai Sea and were reorganized into the 4th Column of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army. Du Guanghua was appointed commander of the 10th Brigade, defending the coastal areas around Haicheng, Dashiqiao, and Yingkou. Due to the brave combat and outstanding achievements of his troops, the Liaodong Military District honored the 28th Regiment of the 10th Brigade as the "Haicheng Regiment", the 29th Regiment as the "Anshan Regiment", and the 30th Regiment as the "Dashiqiao Regiment". In October of the same year, the 10th Brigade was renamed the 10th Division. Du Guanghua led his troops to completely annihilate over 8,000 soldiers of the Kuomintang’s "Thousand-Mile Steed" 25th Division in the Xinkailing Campaign. On December 17, 1946, the Kuomintang assembled forces from three divisions to launch a major offensive against the Changbai Mountain base centered on Linjiang. The famous "Four Defenses of Linjiang" campaign of the Northeast Liberation War began, and our forces quickly repelled the enemy’s first two offensives. On February 13, 1947, the Kuomintang regrouped nearly four divisions to launch a third attack on the Linjiang region. During the "Third Defense of Linjiang" campaign, the officers and soldiers of the 10th Division of the 4th Column of the Northeast Democratic Allied Army, tasked with blocking and reinforcing, fought valiantly. At dusk on the 22nd, Division Commander Du Guanghua was unfortunately shot and killed on Hill 571 in Dalongzhao Gully (now part of Changqing Village, Guanghua Town, Tonghua County), at the age of 31.

Formed in February 1947 and utilized in September 1985. On August 6, 1947, the Tonghua County Government renamed Xin’an Village, where Du Guanghua fell, to Guanghua Village. In January 1948, the Guanghua District was established to express boundless reverence and deep remembrance. It is now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit and a patriotic education base.
