Guide It has been determined that the parent body of the Jilin meteorite was originally a planet within the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter in the solar system, with an age of approximately 4.6 billion years. About eight million years ago, during its orbit, it collided with another celestial body, resulting in a massive explosion that ejected it from the asteroid belt and sent it hurtling to the Earth's surface. Scientific analysis shows that the Jilin meteorite belongs to the olivine group, specifically a bronzite chondrite. It is composed of nearly forty minerals and contains eighteen elements, making it an extremely precious cosmic sample. When the Jilin meteorite rain fell, it descended like a torrential storm, with roaring sounds that could be clearly heard hundreds of miles away. The tremendous impact and shockwaves shattered countless residential windows upon landing. The scale of the event and the sheer force were akin to an atomic bomb. Yet, incredibly, not a single person or animal was injured or killed — a true marvel. Introduction At around 15:00 on March 8, 1976, within a 500-square-kilometer plain area near Jilin City and Yongji County, an ear-shattering roar heralded the sudden arrival of an ancient visitor to Earth — this exceptionally rare stony meteorite shower was remarkable for its extraordinary quantity, immense weight, and high scientific value. Today, at the southern part of Jilin City’s Jiangnan Park and inside the city museum, 138 larger meteorites are on display, weighing a total of 2,616 kilograms, including the largest piece which weighs 1,775 kilograms — currently the largest stony meteorite in the world.
