If you’re near Taipei Metro’s Taipei City Hall Station but want to avoid the pricey food court underground, Lane 30, Yongji Road is a great alternative — especially in the evening when it transforms into a veritable food heaven. While exploring the alley for a bite, consider trying “Duck Meat Xie” if you’re looking for something special. With its sweet and fragrant broth and delicious duck meat, this spot has become a renowned eatery in the lane.

The angelica duck noodle soup is the shop’s signature dish. At first glance, it may seem like just duck meat with wheat noodles, but the portion of duck is surprisingly generous. A sip of the coffee-colored broth reveals why the place remains packed even after dinner — the angelica herbal broth has just the right amount of medicinal flavor, with the aroma of angelica seamlessly blended into the soup. Its sweet taste goes down smoothly, showcasing the shop’s exceptional soup-making skills.

“Duck Meat Xie” is now in its second generation. The freshness and deliciousness of the duck meat come from using “warm-body duck” that is blanched, resulting in a clear duck broth. The angelica broth is simmered with dozens of Chinese herbs in addition to angelica itself. Though the herbal notes are present, they are not overpowering, making it enjoyable even for those who aren’t typically fond of traditional medicine flavors.

The shop offers four types of noodles to choose from: wheat noodles, vermicelli, glass noodles, and rice noodles. Despite being a simple-looking eatery, there are plenty of choices even for regular visitors. The duck meat is also prepared differently from other shops — sliced thinly — resulting in a surprisingly tender texture, allowing every bite to be infused with the rich flavors of the broth.
