Beishan Ancient Temple Complex

The Beishan Ancient Temple Complex is a cultural relic protection unit of Jilin Province.

The Beishan Ancient Temple Complex is located on the eastern peak of Beishan Park, which stands at an elevation of 255 meters. The temples extend from the mountainside all the way to the summit, featuring distinctive architectural styles and forming an ancient temple cluster with a history of nearly 300 years.

The temples in Beishan present a rare fusion of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism, with various folk deities worshipped together, creating an atmosphere rich in grassroots, everyday religiosity. This complex vividly reflects the folk customs of the northeastern region during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period. Such a combination is extremely uncommon among temples elsewhere in China. Looking up from the foot of Beishan Mountain to the eastern peak, you’ll see layers of hills embracing the towering temples. As you ascend the stone steps, you’ll come across notable structures including the Fansnow Hall, Guan Di Temple, Medicine King Temple, Kanli Palace, and Jade Emperor Pavilion. Among these, the Jade Emperor Pavilion is the highest, largest, and most magnificent structure within the Beishan ancient architectural ensemble. Also known as the Great Buddha Pavilion, it was first built in 1725 and renovated in 1926. The grand hall features impressive architecture, with statues of the Four Heavenly Kings standing on either side of the main entrance. The Ancestral Masters Hall enshrines Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) of Buddhism, Laozi (the founder of Taoism), and Confucius (the sage of Confucianism). In addition, the side halls house statues of 16 patron saints of various trades, including the Medicine King Li Shizhen and Lu Ban, the patron saint of carpenters.

In the courtyard of the Jade Emperor Pavilion stand several towering ancient pine trees, said to have been planted by the founding monk Kuanzhen himself—over 200 years ago.
