Zhongshan Square Architectural Complex in Shenyang

The Zhongshan Square Architectural Complex in Shenyang is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The Zhongshan Square Architectural Complex in Shenyang includes Zhongshan Square and the six remaining major buildings around it. Originally called Central Square, Zhongshan Square was first built in 1913 and renamed "Naniwa Square" in 1919. At that time, there was a monument in the center of the square built by the Japanese to commemorate the Battle of Mukden during the Russo-Japanese War. During the rule of the Kuomintang, the original monument was demolished and the square was renamed Zhongshan Square.

Aside from the former Shenyang Railway Bureau Public Security Office, which was demolished and rebuilt, the six surrounding buildings of Zhongshan Square still retain their original appearances. With the Zhongshan Square Architectural Complex being included in the seventh batch of “National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units,” any maintenance or restoration work on these buildings now requires approval from the National Cultural Heritage Administration.

In May 2013, the State Council (State Council Document [2013] No. 13) announced the Zhongshan Square Architectural Complex in Shenyang as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.
