The upgrade project of the Laohutan Cross-Sea Aerial Gondola was invested and constructed by Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park, with a total investment of 30 million yuan, and designed and built by Beijing Crane Machinery Design & Research Institute. The new gondola station starts from the East Mountain scenic area of Laohutan in the north and extends to the mountaintop of the Bird Forest in the south, spanning a total length of 600 meters and connecting the northern and southern parts of the park across the sea. After nearly 10 months of construction, assembly, debugging, personnel training, and multiple successful safety rescue drills, it passed the inspection by the China Ropeway Inspection Center in September 2012 and obtained a qualification certificate.

The gondola line is equipped with 16 fully automatic detachable 6-person comfortable cabins, with a maximum operating speed of 5 meters per second. The hourly passenger capacity has increased from 288 to 1,000. In addition to enhancing the thrill of the ride, the new gondola also completely resolves the issue of long queues caused by insufficient capacity. Furthermore, the new gondola adopts advanced foreign technologies such as automatic detachment, and is installed with over 110 types of automatic detection and control switches along the entire line. This means that if any malfunction occurs during operation, engineering staff in the gondola control room can identify the fault location and cause via computer, enabling prompt and effective troubleshooting. For unconventional technical issues, signals can also be directly sent to the Beijing Crane Machinery Research Institute for online connection, allowing remote control and adjustment from Beijing. The greatest advantages of this system include accurate fault localization, detailed fault type identification, automated control room operations, and remote troubleshooting capabilities. The newly introduced gondola utilizes three power supply methods: dedicated power distribution, backup motor connection to the municipal power grid, and diesel generator power supply. As a result, power outages during normal operation have been entirely eliminated, ensuring the safety of passengers.
