Japanese curry specialty store in Zhongshan District, Taipei – free refills on rice and curry sauce!

I’m a big fan of curry, whether it’s Japanese or Thai. The fragrant curry paired with fluffy, springy rice always gets me digging in for multiple servings. This Curry Shop in Shijixiang, near Zhongshan Elementary School Station, is a small place I noticed on a friend’s social media post. It only sells curry rice, with two main dishes, but it always draws large crowds during meal hours. It’s truly a case of “great food hidden in an alley,” and the incredible value—free refills on both rice and curry—is what people love most.

I arrived before the peak dining hours to avoid the crowds.

The shop is very simple—just come, eat, and leave.

The menu is straightforward: pork cutlet curry, crispy fried chicken curry, a combo of both, or even a veggie curry if you skip the meat. It’s a super simple set of options.

You can get free refills on rice and curry sauce here, but no takeout, sorry!

Prices are low, and the service is pretty basic too, so everything is self-service—you clear your own table and return your plates to the staff afterward.

I ordered the crispy fried chicken curry for just NT$130, but the presentation and taste were way beyond that price point.

A soft-set sunny-side-up egg, richly colored curry, golden and crispy fried chicken chunks, paired with simple bean sprouts and sliced beef tomatoes—simple-looking but seriously mouthwatering.

First off, this curry leans toward the Japanese style. It’s thick and rich from slow simmering, and the carrots and potatoes are almost melting into the sauce. There’s a hint of spicy aroma but it’s not too hot, with a touch of sweetness that never gets cloying. This is the kind of Japanese curry that just begs to be eaten with white rice.

It’s the kind of curry that makes you want to keep eating spoonful after spoonful—and that’s a total diet buster!

The fried chicken is golden, crispy, and there are three big pieces.

Bite into one and it’s juicy right away—the chicken is super tender. It’s boneless thigh meat, and it’s undeniably delicious. Seriously satisfying fried chicken!

For a healthier touch, there’s also a side salad and fruit for dessert—watermelon!
