Xizhong Island

Xizhong Island is located in Jiaoliudao Township, Wafangdian, Dalian. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was called Lotus Island, a name derived from the aerial view of the island, which resembles a blooming lotus on the blue Bohai Sea. Due to its beautiful environment and abundant resources, Xizhong Island was occupied by Tsarist Russia in history, then contested by Japan in 1905, and was not liberated and returned to the motherland until 1945.

Xizhong Island has two unique features: it is the only beach among all the beaches in Dalian, and it is also the only island in China where you can drive ashore along a salt embankment road. The tidal flats of Xizhong Island are sandy, with fine golden grains that are soft and delicate, stretching out gently and continuously. At sunset, the 4-kilometer winding beach is bathed in golden sunlight, and both the sand and the sea shimmer with a golden glow. There are plenty of activities to enjoy on Xizhong Island — playing beach volleyball, soccer, or building sand sculptures is even more fun thanks to the soft sand. During low tide in the afternoon, you can go tide-pooling to find small crabs and big starfish.
