Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei in Beijing
The Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei in Beijing is a protected cultural heritage site of Beijing Municipality and a base for patriotic education.
No. 75 Dongtangzi Hutong, formerly No. 33 Dongtangzi Hutong, located on the north side of the western section of the hutong, is a three-courtyard residence facing south with a construction area of 368 square meters. The street entrance was created by repurposing a rear room of a southern-facing wing house, showing no particular design order. The first courtyard has five southern-facing wing rooms; the second courtyard has four southern rooms, three northern rooms, one side room each on the east and west, and three wing rooms each on the east and west sides; the third courtyard has three northern rooms with front porches. All the houses in the courtyard have traditional upturned eaves and clay-tiled roofing. Cai Yuanpei rented this place from 1917 to 1920. At that time, the five southern-facing wing rooms in the first courtyard were used as the living room. In October 1985, the Dongcheng District People’s Government listed it as a cultural heritage site under the name “Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei.”
Cai Yuanpei’s former residence is somewhat different from others. Other former residences—such as those of Guo Moruo, Lu Xun, Mei Lanfang, and Lao She—were homes owned by the individuals themselves during their lifetimes, with full property rights. But Cai Yuanpei never owned any real estate. By the time he passed away in Hong Kong in 1940, he did not own a single property on the Chinese mainland. Among the several residences Cai Yuanpei rented in Beijing, No. 75 Dongtangzi Hutong in Dongcheng District was designated as the “Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei” because he lived there from 1917 to 1923 while serving as president of Peking University. It was here that the May Fourth Movement was initiated.
