Wafangdian Yunqi Zen Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Yunqi Zen Temple, originally named Guanyin Pavilion, is located in Xietun Town, Wafangdian City, Dalian. To its west lies the vast Bohai Sea, facing Jiaoliu Island, and it is about 20 Chinese miles south of Changxing Island. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, Yunqi Zen Temple nestles among the peaks, serving as a tranquil paradise — the locals in Dalian call it the “temple in the mountains.”

Historical records indicate that the temple was first built in the 14th year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty, covering an area of approximately two hectares. It was constructed along the mountain terrain and adapted to the natural landscape. The temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and was rebuilt in 2002, covering an area of 18,000 square meters. Structures such as the Mahavira Hall, Guanyin Hall, monastic dormitories, and dining hall were erected. In 2007, it was approved as a site for religious activities. On May 12, 2009, a statue of Sakyamuni was brought from the meditation center in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the northeastern China’s first “Four-Faced Buddha” (the Wealth-Blessing Buddha), along with more than 30 other sacred statues including the “Eight Great Teachers,” “Eight Great Bodhisattvas,” and worldly guardians, were enshrined at the temple. The temple was consecrated on July 12, 2009.

Yunqi Zen Temple is renowned for its meditation practice. Its Theravada Buddhist architectural style offers a refreshing change, distinct from traditional Chinese pagodas and Buddha statues, transporting visitors to a foreign realm. Beyond the morning bells and evening drums, and aside from ceremonies and seven-day retreats, meditation is the main focus here.

The nights in the mountains are serene. Far from the hustle and bustle of the city and the glare of bright lights, only the starry sky above is within reach — making it an ideal setting for meditation.
