Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant

Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant is located in Hongyanhe Town, Wafangdian City, and is the first nuclear power project built by China in the northeastern region.

Units 1, 2, and 3 of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant commenced commercial operation on June 6, 2013, May 13, 2014, and August 16, 2015, respectively, and have maintained stable operational performance. Unit 1 achieved six out of nine key international nuclear power operation indicators at advanced levels during its first fuel cycle, while Unit 2 reached three such indicators, maintaining safe and stable operation. Currently, Unit 4 of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant is progressing as planned, and Units 5 and 6 commenced construction on March 29 and July 24, 2015, respectively, with civil engineering work underway.

The construction of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant holds significant importance for improving the local environment. Once all six units are completed, the annual grid-connected electricity output will reach 45 billion kWh, approximately 1.5 times the electricity consumption of Dalian City in 2014. Compared to a coal-fired power plant of the same scale, the six units of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant can reduce standard coal consumption by about 15 million tons per year, cut carbon dioxide emissions by 36 million tons, and achieve a comprehensive emission reduction effect equivalent to afforesting 99,000 hectares, accounting for 21% of Dalian’s forested area.

The construction of the Hongyanhe Nuclear Power Plant has further enhanced China’s level of nuclear power self-reliance and domestic production. The overall domestic production rate of its Phase I project reached 80%, with major nuclear island equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and steam generators all domestically produced.

The nuclear power plant has established a nuclear power production principle exhibition room, a simulated control center training room, and other facilities to receive group visits and learning sessions, promoting and popularizing knowledge about nuclear power.
